If you search "como comprar dogwifhat" from Sao Paulo, Recife or Porto Alegre, you will find plenty of global guides that assume you have a US dollar bank card and a Coinbase login. Brazil works differently. Your money moves by PIX, your tax authority is the Receita Federal and the crypto regulator, since the new rules came in, is the Banco Central. This page is the Brazilian version of the story. If you want the generic global steps first, read how to buy WIF.
Quick context on the coin: WIF (dogwifhat) is a Solana meme token with a Shiba Inu in a pink hat as its mascot, 998.9 million tokens in circulation, no native staking and no promised utility. CoinGecko records an all-time high of $4.83 on 31 March 2024 and an all-time low of $0.00155464 on 12 December 2023. It is speculative; treat it as such.
The honest first problem: WIF may not be on your local exchange
Before PIX, regulation or tax, one practical thing. We searched for confirmation that Brazilian exchanges Mercado Bitcoin and Foxbit list WIF and could not find any. We also did not find a BRL pair for WIF in Binance's original spot listing announcement of 5 March 2024, which named BTC, USDT, FDUSD and TRY pairs. Third-party converters show WIF/BRL prices, but converters just apply a currency rate; they are not proof of a tradable market. (Prices on those sites also disagreed with each other, which tells you how much to trust them.)
So your realistic routes are:
- A local exchange with WIF on its list. Open the asset list in the app and search WIF. Listings change; no blog (including this one) can substitute for that two-minute check.
- A local exchange for the BRL leg, then a swap. Buy USDT or SOL with PIX, withdraw to your own Solana wallet and swap into WIF there or on an exchange that lists it.
- An international exchange that accepts Brazilian users. Check whether it accepts your country, BRL deposit methods and local legal entity.
For the local-exchange side, our Mercado Bitcoin review covers what it offers, how deposits work and what to check before you rely on it. For wider context, where to buy WIF compares venue types.
What the Banco Central rules mean for you
Brazil had a long phase of "crypto is legal but lightly regulated". Law 14.478/2022 created the legal framework for virtual-asset service providers (the Portuguese term is prestadoras de servicos de ativos virtuais, PSAVs, and the Banco Central's version is SPSAV) and a later presidential decree designated the Banco Central as the supervising authority.
The Banco Central then issued detailed rules: resolutions BCB 519, 520 and 521, published in November 2025. According to law-firm summaries we read (for example Machado Meyer), the rules entered into force on 2 February 2026 and:
- Resolution 519 sets up the authorisation process: intermediaries, custodians and brokers of virtual assets need prior authorisation from the Banco Central.
- Resolution 520 covers structure, operational requirements and governance of these providers.
- Resolution 521 treats certain virtual-asset operations as part of the foreign-exchange market, with reporting to the Banco Central, and bars authorised providers from operating in cash.
Existing companies had a period to file for authorisation; one secondary source calculates that window as ending on 30 October 2026, about two and a half weeks from our update date. We could not confirm that date in the official text, so check the Banco Central before relying on it. The practical consequence is that over the next months you may see platform announcements about authorisation status, migration of customers, or changes to what a platform offers. Follow your exchange's official notices and keep your WIF in your own wallet if you are worried.
The securities regulator CVM sits next to this: when a token is deemed a security, CVM's rules apply. A meme coin like WIF has not been presented to us as a security, and we are not making a legal classification here, but this is why you may see CVM warnings about unauthorised investment schemes.
Check, do not assume. An "SPSAV" label in an exchange's footer is marketing until you can verify it in a Banco Central notice or register. If you cannot find anything official, ask support in writing and keep the answer.
PIX: the best part of the Brazilian experience
PIX is the instant payment system created by the Banco Central. It runs 24 hours a day, every day, and settles in seconds. For exchange deposits it is by far the most convenient method, and it is usually free for individuals, though each exchange sets its own limits and rules.
Rules of the road:
- Same CPF. Reputable platforms accept PIX only from an account under your CPF. Deposits from a third party's account can be refused or frozen.
- Use the QR code or key inside the app. Do not accept PIX keys sent in chat by "support" or a "friend".
- Nighttime limits. Banks apply lower nighttime limits to PIX for security. If a deposit is rejected at 11 pm, that is probably your bank, not the exchange.
- Reversals. PIX is hard to reverse once you send it to a scammer. Special return mechanisms exist, but do not count on getting money back.
- BRL withdrawals. When you sell WIF, you will withdraw by PIX again. Test with a small amount.
When you compare exchanges, look at the spread in the order book rather than only the advertised fee: for assets with thin BRL liquidity, the real price you pay can differ a lot from the global one. A quick glance at our converter against your fill price tells you how much you are paying for convenience.
Tax in Brazil: the R$35,000 monthly rule and reporting
General information, not tax advice. The authority is the Receita Federal and an accountant (contador) is worth the money if you trade often.
According to the Receita's guidance as summarised by Brazilian outlets and accountants:
- Monthly exemption. Capital gains on crypto sold in a month are exempt from income tax when the total of all crypto sales that month, across all assets, is R$35,000 or less.
- Not a partial exemption. If total sales exceed R$35,000, the whole month's gain is taxable, not just the excess. Rates follow the progressive capital-gains table, starting at 15 percent for the lower tier.
- Monthly payment. Tax on gains is paid by DARF (code 4600) by the last business day of the month following the sales.
- Swaps count. Per Receita's consultation answer cited by advisers (Solucao de Consulta Cosit 214/2021), exchanging one crypto for another is a sale for this purpose. So swapping SOL for WIF can matter for the R$35,000 test even without any reais hitting your bank.
- Annual return (IRPF). Holdings are declared by their cost, with the balance as of 31 December; taxable gains go through the capital-gains schedule and exempt gains are reported as exempt income.
- Reporting rule. IN RFB 1.888/2019 requires exchanges to report operations monthly and, for individuals using foreign platforms, imposes reporting when monthly movements reach a lower threshold (commonly cited as R$30,000). We could not verify in this research whether that instruction has been replaced or amended in 2026, so check the Receita's current text.
Some commentators note that Brazil's broader tax reform debates also touch crypto, and rules for foreign-held assets can change. Keep your records: date, amount in reais, price, platform, and wallet addresses.
Foreign platforms are not tax-free. Using an international exchange does not exempt you from Brazilian reporting. The Receita has specific rules about reporting operations on foreign platforms, so do not assume that going offshore avoids the monthly R$35,000 test.
Exchanges Brazilians usually mention
We list names, not rankings, and we label what we could not verify.
| Name | What we know | What we could not verify |
|---|---|---|
| Mercado Bitcoin | Long-running Brazilian exchange; see our review | Whether WIF is listed today |
| Foxbit | Brazilian exchange widely cited by local users | WIF listing; authorisation status |
| Binance | Global WIF spot listing 5 March 2024 (no BRL pair named) | Local WIF/BRL market; local entity |
| Other local brokers | Many apps offer simple buy buttons | Asset lists vary; read them |
Local legal entities, supervised status and token lists change. A reliable habit: before depositing, search for the platform's name on the Banco Central site and in recent news, and make sure you can read WIF/BRL or a USDT route in the live market list.
One more option is CEX.IO, an exchange operating since 2013 with licences or registrations in several jurisdictions. Whether it serves Brazilian residents, accepts BRL methods and what its local terms say are things to check on its legal page, not assume.

Buy WIF โFrom exchange to wallet: Solana basics
Whichever route you choose, your WIF lives on the Solana network, and the safest place for long-term holdings is a wallet you control. Our guide to wallets for WIF explains seed phrases and compares options such as Solflare. Remember:
- Send a small test first. Solana withdrawal fees are small but can differ by exchange.
- Verify the token on the receiving side using the mint address on our contract address page. Fake WIF tokens exist.
- Keep a bit of SOL in the wallet to pay network fees if you swap or move later.
- Write the recovery phrase on paper, never in a cloud note or WhatsApp.
Scams you will see in Portuguese
- Fake "pump" Telegram and WhatsApp groups. Admins post screenshots of fabricated profits and push you to buy a token before a "listing". It is a classic way to dump on followers.
- "Staking" WIF with fixed monthly return. No native staking exists; see WIF staking and earning.
- Cloned exchange sites in search ads. Use the app-store listing or type the address.
- "Recovery" agents who contact you after a loss and charge upfront. They are scammers.
- PIX to a personal key for OTC. Never pay a stranger's PIX for crypto you have not received.
- Impersonation of authorities. Neither the Receita nor the Banco Central asks you to pay "release fees" to a private key.
Our is dogwifhat safe page covers token-level checks like the anonymous team and the big drawdowns.
A sensible way to approach it
Start with a small amount in reais that does not touch your rent or emergency fund. Run the PIX deposit, the swap and a withdrawal to your own wallet once with a minimal sum, so you learn the whole path before the bigger money. Write down your monthly sales total from the first day; the R$35,000 test is easy to cross by accident if you swap between coins. And remember: after the Banco Central's new regime, expect more changes in how platforms operate. Read official announcements and keep your records.

Quick answers
Is buying crypto legal in Brazil?
Yes. Individuals can buy and hold crypto-assets. Law 14.478/2022 created the legal framework for virtual-asset service providers, and the Banco Central do Brasil is the authority that regulates and authorises them under rules issued in late 2025.
Can I buy WIF with PIX?
PIX lets you deposit reais on Brazilian exchanges instantly, but whether WIF is listed is separate. We could not confirm WIF on Mercado Bitcoin or Foxbit, so check the asset list in the app, or buy USDT or SOL with PIX and swap.
Do I pay tax when I sell WIF in Brazil?
Capital gains on crypto sold in a month are exempt if total sales that month stay at or below R$35,000. Above that, the whole gain is taxed at progressive capital-gains rates starting at 15 percent, paid by DARF. This is general information, not tax advice.
What is IN RFB 1.888?
It is the Receita Federal rule requiring exchanges, and individuals using foreign platforms, to report crypto operations above monthly thresholds, commonly cited at R$30,000. Check the Receita's current text before relying on figures.
Do I need to declare crypto in my annual return?
Holdings above the Receita's reporting thresholds should appear in your annual income tax return (IRPF), along with gains. Balances as of 31 December are normally declared. Confirm details on gov.br/receitafederal or with an accountant.
Is WIF staking available at Brazilian exchanges?
WIF has no native staking. Products that promise fixed returns on WIF are third-party lending or DeFi products with their own risks, or outright scams. Treat monthly guaranteed returns as a red flag.
