Buying WIF for the first time: a plain walkthrough

Two routes get you WIF: a regular exchange, or a Solana wallet plus a DEX. Here is each one step by step, with the checks that keep you away from fake tokens.

🛡️Prefer a regulated platform? CEX.IO holds licences and registrations in several jurisdictions. Check their legal page.

Buying dogwifhat is easier than most people think and riskier in different places than most people expect. The buying part takes minutes. The mistakes (wrong token, wrong network, a phishing link, buying more than you can afford to lose) are where the pain comes from. This guide covers both ways to get WIF, shows which one suits which person, and ends with storage and safety. If you want to know what you are buying first, read what is dogwifhat; if you want to compare platforms in more depth, see where to buy WIF.

Risk first. WIF is a volatile memecoin. It reached $4.83 in March 2024 (CoinGecko) and has been far lower since. Spend only money you can afford to lose. This is not financial advice.

Which route is right for you?

There are two realistic paths:

  1. Centralised exchange (CEX). You register, verify your identity, deposit money in your local currency and buy WIF. The exchange holds the coins for you unless you withdraw them. Simple, familiar, subject to KYC.
  2. Solana wallet plus a DEX. You install a wallet, buy SOL somewhere, then swap SOL for WIF on a decentralized exchange aggregator. You control the keys, but you also carry all the responsibility.
Exchange Wallet + DEX
Setup time Account and ID check Wallet install, minutes
Pay with Bank, card, local currency SOL or stablecoin
Custody Platform (unless withdrawn) You
Main risk Platform and account security Fake tokens, phishing, user error

If this is your first crypto purchase, an exchange is the gentler start. If you already hold SOL and know how to read a transaction, the wallet route is fine. Plenty of people do both: buy on an exchange, then withdraw to a wallet.

Route 1: buying WIF on an exchange

  1. Pick a platform that lists WIF in your country. WIF listings differ by region. Binance listed WIF spot on 5 March 2024 (pairs included USDT, BTC, FDUSD and TRY), and Coinbase announced a listing plan, but listings, regional restrictions and pairs change. Search for "WIF" inside the platform itself rather than trusting an old headline. Our exchange comparison lists options and what to check.
  2. Register and verify. Expect to enter an email, create a strong unique password, switch on two-factor authentication (an authenticator app beats SMS) and upload an ID. Regulated exchanges must do this by law in most countries.
  3. Deposit funds. Bank transfer is typically the cheapest, cards are faster but often pricier. Check the deposit fee before confirming.
  4. Find WIF. Some platforms show a WIF/USD or WIF/USDT order book; others have a simple "convert" screen. Make sure the ticker is WIF and the name is dogwifhat.
  5. Place the order. A market order buys immediately at the best available price; a limit order only fills at the price you set. Memecoins can move fast, so a limit order protects against nasty slippage.
  6. Check the total cost. Look at the fee line and, on convert screens, the spread built into the quoted rate.
  7. Decide about withdrawal. Leaving a small amount on a reputable exchange is a personal call; for larger amounts many people prefer their own wallet (see below).

CEX.IO is one option among these: a long-running exchange that offers a WIF conversion screen. Before using it, or any exchange, read its legal page and look it up in the relevant regulator registers (for example the UK FCA register, FinCEN's MSB search in the US, or the Bank of Lithuania's registry for VASPs). We cannot vouch for any platform's safety, and fees and limits change, so check the current fee page.

Route 2: buying WIF with a Solana wallet

Here is the self-custody path. It looks technical but is just a handful of repeatable steps.

Set up the wallet

Install a well-known Solana wallet such as Phantom or Solflare, downloaded from the official site or your phone's official app store, never from a link in a message. During setup you will get a seed phrase (usually 12 or 24 words). Write it on paper, store it offline, and never type it into a website or send it to anyone. Anyone with those words owns your funds. For a deeper comparison, see best wallets for WIF.

Get SOL

Solana tokens need SOL for network fees, and most WIF swaps start from SOL or a stablecoin like USDC. Buy SOL on an exchange, withdraw it to your wallet's Solana address, and be sure to choose the Solana network on withdrawal. Sending to the wrong network can lose funds.

Swap for WIF

Swapping takes place on a DEX or an aggregator such as Jupiter. Open the official site by typing the address yourself or using a bookmark, connect the wallet, select SOL as the "from" token and then WIF as the "to" token. The critical step: paste the mint address, not the name, and confirm that it matches what CoinGecko shows. The real one is:

EKpQGSJtjMFqKZ9KQanSqYXRcF8fBopzLHYxdM65zcjm

Dozens of tokens call themselves "WIF" or "dogwifhat", and some are made precisely to catch careless buyers. Our contract address guide shows how to verify it on Solscan and spot clones.

Check slippage and fees

Slippage is the gap between the price you see and the price you get. For a liquid token like WIF a small tolerance is typically enough; a high slippage setting invites sandwich attacks and bad fills. Review the quote, the network fee (usually small on Solana) and any platform fee, then confirm in your wallet. After the swap, WIF shows up in your wallet's token list, and you can check it on Solscan.

How much does buying WIF really cost?

The headline trading fee is only one of four costs:

  • Trading or swap fee charged by the platform.
  • Spread — the difference between the buy and sell price on convert screens.
  • Deposit and withdrawal fees, including card surcharges and network fees.
  • Slippage on thin or fast-moving markets.

Compare the full path for your amount, not the advertised percentage. A tiny purchase can be dominated by a fixed withdrawal fee, while a large one is dominated by spread and slippage. We deliberately do not quote fee percentages here, because they change; use each platform's current fee page.

Where should WIF live after you buy it?

Three common choices:

  • On the exchange. Convenient for trading, but you rely on the platform and your own account security.
  • In a software wallet. Free, flexible and good for small and medium amounts. Keep the seed phrase offline.
  • In a hardware wallet. Better for amounts you would hate to lose; a hardware device signs transactions without exposing keys.

Whatever you choose, protect the basics: unique passwords, authenticator-app 2FA, no screenshots of seed phrases, and no clicking links from unsolicited messages. If a stranger offers to "help you buy WIF" in a direct message, it is a scam.

Common mistakes to avoid

  1. Buying the wrong token. Always compare the mint address.
  2. Wrong network on withdrawal. For WIF the network is Solana.
  3. Chasing a spike. A green candle is not a signal; see our price page for how volatile it can be.
  4. Believing "WIF staking" ads. WIF has no native staking; see staking and earning.
  5. Skipping the tax angle. In many countries, crypto gains are taxable. Check your tax authority's guidance; this is not tax advice.
  6. Using borrowed money. Never.

Country notes

Which platform you can use depends on where you live. We have separate guides for the USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, France and more. Rules on fiat deposits, derivatives and memecoin availability differ, so read the one that fits you.

Market order, limit order or convert screen?

Beginners often get stuck on this. A convert screen shows a single quoted rate and one button; it is the simplest, but the spread is built into the rate, so compare it with the live price on a tracker. A market order on an exchange's trading screen buys right now at the best prices in the order book, and a big order can walk through several price levels. A limit order lets you name the price; it may fill partly or not at all. For small amounts the differences are small; for larger ones they matter. Whichever you pick, do one thing first: a small test purchase teaches you the interface at low cost.

What happens after you buy

Your WIF will appear in your exchange balance or in your wallet's token list. If you used a wallet, remember that a token only shows once the wallet has created a token account for it, which Solana wallets generally do automatically for a small fee. If you sell later, you will want to know your cost basis for tax purposes: keep a record of dates, amounts and fees. Many countries treat crypto sales as taxable events; check your tax authority's guidance, since we cannot give tax advice.

A sensible first-purchase checklist

  • I know what dogwifhat is and that it can go to near zero.
  • I can afford to lose the amount.
  • I verified the platform on its regulator's register or at least read its legal page.
  • I copied the mint address from a trusted source and checked it.
  • I enabled two-factor authentication.
  • I wrote my seed phrase on paper, offline, if I use a wallet.
  • I know the total cost, including fees and spread.

Tick all of those and you have done more homework than most buyers. After you own WIF, the useful next reads are the tokenomics and a calm look at the price outlook, which explains why nobody can reliably call the next move.

Quick answers

How do I buy dogwifhat?

Create an account on an exchange that lists WIF, verify your identity, deposit money, then buy WIF with a market or limit order. Alternatively, install a Solana wallet, fund it with SOL and swap SOL for WIF on a decentralized exchange using the official mint address.

Can I buy dogwifhat on Coinbase?

Coinbase announced plans to list WIF and support has been reported on its WIF-USD pair, but availability depends on your country. Open the Coinbase markets page and search for WIF in your own account to confirm the current status.

What is the cheapest way to buy WIF?

It depends on the platform's trading fee, spread, deposit method and, for a DEX, network and swap fees. Compare the full cost of your exact amount on the fee pages before buying. Fees change often, so do not trust old screenshots.

Can I buy WIF with a credit card?

Some exchanges and on-ramps accept cards, usually with higher fees than bank transfer. Card rules vary by country and by issuing bank. Check the payment page of your chosen platform and watch for cash-advance charges from your bank.

How much WIF should a beginner buy?

We cannot give personal advice. As a rule, WIF is a high-risk memecoin, so many people start with a small amount they could lose entirely, and avoid borrowing or using rent or emergency money.

How do I avoid buying fake WIF?

Copy the mint address from CoinGecko or the official project links, paste it into a Solana explorer such as Solscan, and match it exactly before swapping. Never trust a token found through a DM, a pop-up ad or a search result without checking.
