Buying dogwifhat (WIF) as a Canadian, step by step

Canada regulates crypto platforms province by province, and WIF is sold here as a registered-platform product. This is what we could verify about Bitbuy, Newton, Kraken and the CRA's tax rules.

Canada is one of the more orderly places to buy a meme coin, and that is slightly funny given what WIF is: a Shiba Inu in a pink knitted hat. Where the US has a tangle of agencies, Canada has one idea applied everywhere. If a platform lets you trade crypto, provincial securities regulators want it registered, and they want you to see a plain-language risk disclosure before you buy. Below we walk through that system, the platforms we could verify, how Interac e-Transfer fits in, and what the Canada Revenue Agency expects from you at tax time.

How crypto is regulated in Canada, in two minutes

There is no single federal securities regulator. Instead, provincial and territorial regulators coordinate through the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), and each one issues its own registrations. That is why you will see the phrase "CSA-registered" in marketing, even though the actual registration sits on a provincial list such as the Ontario Securities Commission's registered crypto asset trading platforms page or the FCNB list in New Brunswick.

Two details matter to a buyer:

  • Foreign platforms count. The OSC has said that platforms outside Ontario that let Ontarians trade are treated as operating in Ontario, and it has pursued unregistered operators. That is why several big offshore exchanges either registered, restricted Canadian users or left.
  • Registration is not a safety guarantee. The CSA itself has said registration cannot eliminate all risks of crypto trading. It means the firm meets conduct, custody and disclosure rules, not that WIF will hold its value.

For the long-tail question "is dogwifhat legal in Canada", the short answer is that nothing in Canadian law bans holding it. The question is where you buy, and whether that venue is allowed to serve you.

The Crypto Asset Statement: Canada's quirky WIF disclosure

Here is the angle you will not find in US or European guides. Registered Canadian platforms must assess each token they offer, and many publish a Crypto Asset Statement explaining their conclusion. For WIF, we found two:

  • Newton's help-centre statement on dogwifhat, last updated on 27 March 2026, says Newton reviewed WIF and concluded it is not a security or derivative under Canadian law, and that it would have to halt, suspend and remove WIF if that conclusion changed.
  • Bitbuy's Crypto Asset Statement for WIF says WIF is offered as a crypto contract under a prospectus exemption granted by the CSA, and that no Canadian securities regulator has opined on whether WIF is a security.

Read these before buying. They are short, they describe how the platform holds your tokens, and they name the risks in surprisingly blunt language. They also show that availability can change: a platform can delist a token if its legal view shifts, which is a risk you do not face on a self-custody wallet.

Platform by platform: what we could verify

Registration details below are from regulator lists as of October 2026. Always open the current list for your own province, because categories and dates get updated.

Bitbuy and Coinsquare

Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd. is listed as an investment dealer and marketplace, and it also carries on business as Bitbuy, with a registration date of 11 October 2024 on the list we checked. The Ontario list notes that Bitbuy's earlier exemptive relief expired because Coinsquare acquired the business. In plain English: Bitbuy is now run under Coinsquare's registration. Bitbuy has a WIF price page and a Crypto Asset Statement. We did not find a separate Coinsquare page for WIF, so do not assume the token is on both brands.

Newton

Newton Crypto Ltd. appears as a restricted dealer, with a March 2026 date on the FCNB list. A restricted dealer registration is a tighter category than a full investment dealer: it generally limits how the platform can offer products and what it can hold. Newton's WIF statement is the one quoted above.

Kraken

Regulator lists show Payward Canada Inc. and Payward Inc. (doing business as Kraken) as a restricted dealer, dated 1 April 2025. Kraken's own pages say you can buy WIF with fiat, and its asset pages are worth checking for the CAD pair, which we could not confirm independently. Our Kraken review covers fees and the pro-grade interface.

Netcoins and others

Netcoins is a well-known Canadian name, and keyword data shows people searching "netcoins WIF price CAD". We could not verify that Netcoins lists dogwifhat, so we are not going to say it does. Check its markets page directly. The same goes for any smaller platform you stumble across.

CEX.IO

CEX.IO is a long-running exchange that says it holds licences in several jurisdictions. We did not find it on the Canadian registered lists we reviewed, so Canadian residents should verify whether it serves their province before opening an account, using its legal page and the regulator lists above. Our CEX.IO review explains what we checked.

If a platform offers WIF to Canadians but you cannot find it on any provincial registration list, treat that as a red flag, not a technicality. Ask support which regulator oversees them and search their name on the OSC or FCNB site.

Interac e-Transfer and other ways to fund your account

Canadian buyers have one huge convenience: Interac e-Transfer. Bitbuy's WIF page mentions CAD deposits by Interac e-Transfer or bank transfer, and most registered Canadian platforms offer something similar. A typical flow is:

  1. Register on a platform that is on your provincial regulator's list.
  2. Complete identity verification. Expect ID, a selfie and a few questions about your income and investing experience, since registered dealers must assess suitability.
  3. Under CAD deposits, pick Interac e-Transfer and note the recipient address, the amount and any reference code.
  4. Send the e-Transfer from your online banking. Funds often arrive within minutes, though first deposits can be held longer.
  5. Search for WIF, enter a CAD amount and read the quote carefully, including the platform spread.
  6. Optionally withdraw to a Solana wallet after a small test transfer; our wallet guide lists safe options.

Other methods include online bill payment, wire transfers and debit cards on some platforms. Credit cards are frequently blocked or treated as cash advances by Canadian banks. In either case, send e-Transfers only from an account in your own name; third-party payments cause frozen accounts.

Limits matter too. Registered platforms can set caps for new users, and some products have investment limits tied to your risk profile. We are deliberately not quoting numbers because they change; open the fee and limits page on the platform.

Taxes: what the CRA wants you to know

The CRA distinguishes two cases, described in its guidance on reporting income from crypto-asset transactions.

Capital gains (most buyers). If you buy WIF as an investment and sell later, the result is usually a capital gain or loss. A capital gain is proceeds minus adjusted cost base and selling costs. Only half of a capital gain is taxable. Dispositions include selling for CAD, swapping WIF for another coin, spending it, and gifting it. Capital losses can be applied only against taxable capital gains, with carry-back of three years and indefinite carry-forward, according to the CRA guidance.

Business income (some traders). If your activity looks like a business (frequent trading, short holds, borrowed money, serious market study, advertising), the CRA may treat profits as business income, which is fully taxable. The CRA says this is decided case by case.

Records. The CRA expects dates, units, the value in Canadian dollars and counterparties for every transaction, and it says to keep records for at least six years. Download your platform's transaction history regularly. If an exchange shuts down, your history can disappear.

You report capital gains on Schedule 3 of your T1 return. The CRA is updating some of its older crypto guidance, so read the current Guide for cryptocurrency users and tax professionals rather than relying on summaries, ours included.

General information only, not tax or legal advice. Quebec residents also file a provincial return with its own forms. A Canadian accountant who handles crypto can save you more than they cost.

Common mistakes Canadians make with WIF

  • Searching for the wrong ticker. Several tokens use "WIF" or "dogwif" in the name. Compare the mint address to the one on our contract address page.
  • Thinking CAD price pages agree. We saw WIF quoted at wildly different CAD figures across third-party sites, which shows how stale or inconsistent aggregator data can be. Use the live calculator at the top of this page, then confirm on your platform.
  • Chasing "WIF staking". There is no native WIF staking, and promises of yield usually mean a scam or third-party DeFi risk. Our staking guide explains.
  • Ignoring spreads. Instant-buy buttons bundle a spread on top of the fee. Compare against the order book if the platform offers one.
  • Skipping the fraud checks. The CSA reported over 1,000 investor alerts in a recent year, with most related to crypto. Fake regulators and fake dispute-resolution bodies are a recurring pattern. Verify any "registered" claim on the real regulator site.

Which route suits whom?

If you want the simplest regulated on-ramp in CAD, start with a registered platform that shows WIF and offers Interac e-Transfer, and read its Crypto Asset Statement. If you want a deeper order book, look at Kraken. If you prefer self-custody, you can buy SOL on a registered platform and swap on a Solana DEX, remembering that each swap is a taxable disposition of the SOL. Our where to buy WIF page compares fee structures, and the general buying guide covers the on-chain steps.

Quick answers

Can Canadians buy dogwifhat?

Yes. Newton and Bitbuy both publish Crypto Asset Statements or contract disclosures covering WIF, and Kraken also lists it. Each is registered with provincial securities regulators, but registration does not remove the price risk of a volatile meme coin.

Is dogwifhat available on Bitbuy or Coinsquare?

Bitbuy has a WIF page and a Crypto Asset Statement, and Bitbuy now sits under Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd. We could not confirm a separate Coinsquare listing, so open the app and search for WIF before depositing.

How do I buy WIF with Interac e-Transfer?

Create and verify an account on a registered platform, choose Interac e-Transfer under CAD deposits, send the money to the address shown, then buy WIF with the balance. Bitbuy's WIF page mentions Interac e-Transfer; limits and fees vary.

How does the CRA tax crypto like WIF?

Usually as capital property: half of a capital gain is taxable. Frequent traders can be treated as carrying on a business, which makes profits fully taxable. Keep CAD-valued records of every disposition. This is general information, not tax advice.

Is Kraken legal in Canada?

Regulator lists show Payward Canada Inc. and Payward Inc. (doing business as Kraken) registered as a restricted dealer, with an April 2025 date. Check the current OSC or FCNB list before relying on that, because registrations and conditions can change.

Is Newton still registered for WIF trading?

The New Brunswick FCNB list shows Newton Crypto Ltd. as a restricted dealer, dated March 2026. Newton's own WIF statement was updated on 27 March 2026 and says it would halt WIF if its securities-law view changed.
