The WIF Story So Far, With Dates

From a Shiba in a pink hat to a top-tier Solana memecoin: every milestone here has a date and a source, and anything we could not verify is flagged.

Myth or fact? 🧐

Memecoin history gets rewritten constantly: dates drift, rumours turn into "facts", and every price chart gets a tidy narrative. This timeline sticks to what we could source. Each entry has a date, a link where one exists, and a note when sources disagree or we could not confirm something. If an event is missing, it is because we could not verify it, not because it did not happen.

We are an independent, unofficial guide. Nothing here is financial advice. If you want background on the meme itself, start with what is dogwifhat; if you want live numbers, see the WIF price page.

2023: a hat appears on Solana

WIF launched as a memecoin on Solana in late 2023, built around a photo of a Shiba Inu wearing a pink knitted hat. Decrypt's explainer describes the launch as December 2023. Some other sources say November 2023. CoinGecko's earliest low for WIF is dated 12 December 2023, at about $0.00155, so the token was clearly trading by mid-December. We could not find an official launch announcement from the project, and the team behind it is anonymous, so we do not name a founder and suggest ignoring anyone who does.

The genuine token's mint address on Solana is EKpQGSJtjMFqKZ9KQanSqYXRcF8fBopzLHYxdM65zcjm, the one CoinGecko lists. CoinGecko also shows total supply equal to circulating supply at about 998.9 million tokens, which means there is no scheduled unlock. Our WIF tokenomics page explains what that does and does not imply.

January to March 2024: listings and a rocket

Exchange listings followed attention. KuCoin's own price page says WIF was listed for trading in January 2024; we could not cross-check that against an announcement. Robinhood Crypto's EU service listed WIF in early March 2024, though we have not pinned down the exact date.

On 5 March 2024, Binance opened spot trading with WIF/BTC, WIF/USDT, WIF/FDUSD and WIF/TRY pairs and a Seed Tag, Binance's label for newer, higher-risk assets. Our where to buy WIF page lists the current main venues.

March 2024: the Sphere fundraiser

In March 2024, an online campaign titled "Sphere Wif Hat" asked the community to fund an ad for dogwifhat on the Las Vegas Sphere. According to Decrypt, it passed its $650,000 target within days and reached more than $690,000 in USDC. A crypto influencer, Ansem, promoted it on 10 March. Decrypt's first report noted that the five organisers had shown no proof of contact with the Sphere's marketing team or of money placed on an ad, and the Sphere told Decrypt there was no deal. The ad was never confirmed.

Controversy and aftermath

On 19 June 2024 Decrypt followed up: almost three months on, the ad had not run, the multisig wallet held about $699,159, and roughly $11,906 had left it, with the last transfer in early April. Some donors demanded refunds. An organiser named Mihir said the team was still working on it, and the Sphere declined to comment. Targets for April and May had come and gone. We found no later reporting confirming an ad or a refund process, so the status today is unknown to us. The episode matters because it is the main controversy attached to the WIF community, and it is why our is dogwifhat safe page treats community fundraisers with caution. The fundraiser was not the token's contract, but it shaped how people see the project.

Why dates differ. Outlets quote slightly different peak prices and percentages because they average different venues at different minutes. When we cite a figure, it comes from the named source only.

31 March 2024: the peak

CoinGecko records WIF's all-time high of $4.83 on 31 March 2024. Other providers list $4.80 or $4.84. Whatever the exact number, it marked the top of the first run: the price was more than 3,000 times December 2023's low. In October 2026, CoinGecko's page showed the price roughly 95% below that peak. Past highs do not predict future ones; our WIF price prediction page explains how to treat forecasts.

Mid 2024: quieter months

After the peak, the story was mostly about prices cooling, other Solana memecoins competing for attention (see WIF vs BONK vs POPCAT), and the Sphere update on 19 June. We have not listed rumours or unsourced "partnership" claims for this period, because we could not verify them.

November 2024: Coinbase and Robinhood

On 13 November 2024, Coinbase added WIF to its listing roadmap, according to The Block. Trading would begin in phases once liquidity conditions were met, and support could be restricted in some regions. WIF jumped; The Block reported about 21% at the time of writing, with the price around $4.13, while Decrypt later described a 41% jump to $4.21 with record volume, so the figures differ depending on the moment measured. About two weeks later Robinhood listed WIF, and Decrypt says the price rose 7% within seconds.

10 December 2024: the hangover

On 10 December 2024, Decrypt reported that WIF had lost nearly $1.2 billion of market capitalisation in three days, with a 12% drop that day to about $2.83. Analysts quoted by Decrypt described listings as classic "sell the news" events. On that day Bybit led WIF volume with $179 million against $32 million on Coinbase. It is a handy reminder that a listing is a liquidity event, not an endorsement.

2025 and 2026: what we could verify

This is the thin part of the timeline, and we would rather say so than pad it. Between 2025 and October 2026 we found no major official project announcement, no verified partnership, no WIF-specific exchange-traded product and no verified corporate treasury purchase. What we did find:

  • CoinGecko lists WIF in the Meme, Dog-Themed and Solana Meme categories, and shows it under Solana and Unichain ecosystems. We could not date when the Unichain version appeared, so treat that as a note rather than a milestone, and verify any non-Solana version carefully against the official mint.
  • Exchange coverage grew broad: CoinGecko's table showed over a hundred markets in October 2026, including Binance, OKX, Kraken, Coinbase Exchange and Bitstamp.
  • Secondary sites in October 2026 published short price commentary, but we treat these as opinion, not news.

If you spot a claim of a major 2025 or 2026 event, check whether it came from an exchange, a regulator or a reputable outlet, and whether it names the date. Many "dogwifhat news today" pages are recycled price blurbs with no new facts.

How to read crypto news about WIF

  1. Primary first. Exchange announcements, regulators, CoinGecko and the project's own channels beat aggregator summaries.
  2. Check the date. Old articles resurface with new headlines.
  3. Separate fact from price talk. "WIF flips X" or "analyst sees $Y" is not an event.
  4. Beware of urgency. Posts that say "listing tomorrow" or "huge partnership" without a link are bait.
  5. Cross-check the contract. News about a "new WIF token" or "WIF migration" should be treated as a scam until proven otherwise.

What the timeline tells you

Three patterns stand out. First, WIF's biggest moves came from attention and listings rather than product milestones; there are none to list. Second, listings produced brief spikes followed by large drawdowns in at least one documented case (November to December 2024). Third, the most significant controversy was a community fundraiser whose outcome remains unclear.

None of that means WIF is doomed or destined to climb; it means the token behaves like a memecoin. If you want a feel for how it stacks up against its Solana peers, see WIF vs BONK vs POPCAT. To act on it, the how to buy WIF page covers the steps. We update this page when we can verify a new event and date it in the table above.

Questions people ask about the history

Did a listing ever cause a lasting rally? In the cases we can document, the reaction to a listing was sharp and short. Coinbase's roadmap news on 13 November 2024 sent the price up quickly, and by 10 December 2024 Decrypt was reporting a multi-day slide of about $1.2 billion in market cap. One episode is not a law of nature, but it is a useful caution against buying purely because an exchange added a ticker.

Is the supply still fixed? CoinGecko shows total, circulating and maximum supply all at about 998.9 million WIF. We have not found a verified mechanism for minting or burning more, and we do not claim that any burn or staking feature exists. If a page says otherwise, ask for the contract-level proof.

Why do price histories disagree? Data providers average different exchanges at different times. That is why one source says the peak was $4.83, another $4.80 and a third $4.58 on a different date range. We use CoinGecko as the reference for historical highs and lows and name other sources when they are quoted.

Where do I follow updates? Use exchange announcement pages for listings, regulator websites for legal news, and CoinGecko for market data. Treat anonymous social accounts as rumours until a primary source confirms them.

Quick answers

When did dogwifhat launch?

WIF launched on Solana in late 2023. Decrypt describes the launch as December 2023, some sources say November, and CoinGecko's earliest recorded low is dated 12 December 2023. We could not find an official launch announcement, so we say late 2023.

When did WIF hit its all-time high?

CoinGecko records the all-time high of $4.83 on 31 March 2024. Different data providers show slightly different peaks, for example $4.80 or $4.84, because they average prices from different venues and times.

When was WIF listed on Binance and Coinbase?

Binance opened spot trading for WIF on 5 March 2024 with several pairs and a Seed Tag. Coinbase added WIF to its listing roadmap on 13 November 2024, according to The Block, with trading subject to liquidity and local restrictions.

What was the dogwifhat Sphere campaign?

In March 2024 a community fundraiser raised about $690,000 to advertise dogwifhat on the Las Vegas Sphere. Decrypt reported in June 2024 that the ad had not run and some donors wanted refunds. We found no confirmation it later happened.

What are the latest WIF news items?

We found no major official project announcements in 2026. Recent coverage is mostly price commentary from secondary sites. For a current view, check CoinGecko and the exchanges' own announcement pages rather than relying on unverified social posts.

Who created dogwifhat?

The team behind WIF is anonymous and the project is community-driven. We do not name a founder because we could not verify one, and we recommend ignoring pages that claim to know who is behind it.
