Solana is the home of a particular style of memecoin: cheap to trade, fast to launch, loud on social media. Three of the best-known are dogwifhat (WIF), BONK and POPCAT. People search for "WIF vs BONK" because they want to know which one to buy. We cannot answer that, and nobody honest can. What we can do is lay out how they differ in origin, supply and listings, with dates and sources, and point out what they have in common: all three are speculative.
This page deliberately has no live prices or market caps, because they would be wrong within hours. Use the widget above or CoinGecko for the current picture. Everything else is dated. We are an independent, unofficial guide, and nothing here is financial advice.
The three in one paragraph each
dogwifhat (WIF) is a Solana memecoin built around a photo of a Shiba Inu in a pink knitted hat. It launched in late 2023, the team is anonymous and the project presents as community-driven. See our what is dogwifhat page.
BONK calls itself the first Solana dog coin. CoinGecko says it launched on Christmas Day 2022, after the FTX collapse had hurt Solana's ecosystem, and that its airdrop gave 50% of the supply to Solana community members, including NFT collectors, developers and artists, with no venture capital allocation.
POPCAT is based on an internet meme from October 2020 featuring a cat named Oatmeal, per CoinGecko, which describes the token as having no inherent value and intended only for entertainment. We could not find a reliable official launch date or founder for the token.
Side by side
| WIF | BONK | POPCAT | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Theme | Shiba in a hat | Dog, airdrop | Cat, pop meme |
| Origin | Late 2023 | 25 Dec 2022 | Meme from 2020 |
| Supply | 998.9M | 87.99T | 979.98M |
| Max supply | Equals total | About total | Equals total |
| Team | Anonymous | Community | Unclear |
Supply numbers are from CoinGecko in October 2026 and can change if a project burns tokens (BONK's community has run burn campaigns, such as BURNmas in late 2024, according to Decrypt). All three show total supply equal to circulating supply, so no scheduled token unlocks are looming, though a large share of any memecoin can still sit in a few wallets. A large raw supply number such as BONK's 88 trillion is not a drawback by itself; price per token is just supply divided into value. What matters is the market cap, which you should read from live data.
What the numbers do not tell you
A token with a "cheap" price is not undervalued. BONK trades at a tiny fraction of a dollar per token only because its supply is enormous. Comparing prices per token across projects is meaningless; compare market caps and liquidity instead.
Origins and community
WIF: the image and the attitude
WIF's appeal is the image itself: one frozen, mildly alarmed Shiba and a pink hat. There is no product, only the meme, and a community that has produced PFPs, edits and fundraisers, including the Sphere campaign we cover on the WIF news timeline. Its story also contains a controversy: the "Sphere Wif Hat" fundraiser raised about $690,000 in March 2024, and by June 2024 Decrypt reported the ad had not run. See is dogwifhat safe for details.
BONK: the airdrop dog
BONK is the older of the two dog coins. Its launch and airdrop were aimed at the Solana community, and over time its community built tools and integrations around it, though the token itself remains a memecoin. Its early days as "the" Solana meme earned it a long-lasting spot in the ecosystem. When Solana's market was recovering from the FTX crash, it served as a sentiment barometer.
POPCAT: the clicking cat
POPCAT rides a well-known viral image. Of the three it has the least public information about who is behind it, so due diligence is harder. Its CoinGecko profile calls it a Solana meme coin, and the page shows it among the cat-themed coins. Its all-time high on CoinGecko is $2.05, with no date given on the page, so we do not attach a date.

Rank flips and dated events
Rankings between memecoins change fast, so here are the dated facts we could source:
- March 2024: WIF overtook BONK as Solana's largest memecoin by market cap, per Decrypt.
- 5 March 2024: Binance opened WIF spot trading.
- 13 November 2024: Coinbase added WIF to its roadmap (The Block).
- 19 November 2024: BONK passed WIF again to become Solana's biggest memecoin, according to Decrypt. At that time Decrypt put BONK's market cap above $3.9 billion, with WIF below $3.3 billion. Decrypt gave WIF's all-time high as $4.58, whereas CoinGecko lists $4.83 on 31 March 2024; the difference reflects data sources and averaging.
- 13 February 2025: Coinbase announced phased support for a POPCAT-USD pair (crypto.news), subject to liquidity and region.
We deliberately do not give you today's ranking: it is one click away on CoinGecko, and stale rankings are one of the most common kinds of misinformation on memecoin pages.
Where each trades
CoinGecko's market tables show WIF on Binance, OKX, Kraken, Coinbase Exchange, KuCoin and many others, plus Solana DEXs such as Jupiter and Raydium. BONK and POPCAT also trade on large exchanges and Solana DEXs, but exchange coverage and regional access differ by token and country. The simplest check: look up each token's ticker on the exchange you plan to use, and compare the pair, fees and withdrawal options. Our where to buy WIF page covers how to do that; the same method works for BONK and POPCAT.
On a DEX, always verify the mint address of the token you are swapping. The ones CoinGecko lists are:
- WIF:
EKpQGSJtjMFqKZ9KQanSqYXRcF8fBopzLHYxdM65zcjm - BONK:
DezXAZ8z7PnrnRJjz3wXBoRgixCa6xjnB7YaB1pPB263 - POPCAT:
7GCihgDB8fe6KNjn2MYtkzZcRjQy3t9GHdC8uHYmW2hr
Copycat tokens with the same names and logos exist for all of them, which is exactly why you check. Our WIF contract address guide shows the method.
What they have in common: risk
Why people like them
- Large, active communities and easy-to-grasp branding
- Liquid markets on major venues
- Fast, cheap transactions on Solana
- Fun, low-barrier way to learn how crypto works
Watch out
- No cash flows and little or no utility
- Drawdowns of 80% or more have happened in this sector
- Rankings flip, so "number one" is not a safe harbour
- Scam tokens, fake airdrops and phishing target all three
Correlation matters. These three tend to move with Solana and with overall memecoin sentiment. Owning all three is not diversification; it is the same bet in three costumes.
How to compare them yourself
If you are weighing them, a short checklist does more than any ranking:
- Liquidity. Check 24-hour volume and the order book depth on the venue you will use. Tight spreads matter if you plan to sell. Our WIF converter explains how spread and slippage eat into returns.
- Market cap, not price. Compare the whole-project value, and be aware that all three show circulating supply equal to total supply.
- Concentration. Look at the top holders on a Solana explorer; heavy concentration raises dump risk.
- Contract and history. Verify the genuine address, and read the project's history for controversies.
- Access. Confirm the token is available on a regulated platform in your country.
- Your own limit. Decide in advance the amount you can lose, because this category punishes sizing mistakes.
Is one "better for beginners"?
BONK and WIF have the longest and most documented track records on large exchanges, so there is more information about them. That makes research easier, not investing safer. POPCAT has less verifiable background. If you are brand new, our how to buy WIF walkthrough describes the mechanics, which are identical for the other two.

Join the pack →A realistic takeaway
If you want a verdict: WIF is the Shiba-in-a-hat meme with the most dramatic 2024 arc, BONK is the veteran airdrop dog with the longest ecosystem presence, and POPCAT is the cat meme with the thinnest verifiable backstory. None of those descriptions says which price will rise. Past leaderboards flipped in months; the next one might flip too.
Treat all three as entertainment-grade speculation. Look at the live WIF price before you decide, check the WIF tokenomics for how supply works, and keep position sizes small. And remember that anything promising certainty in this corner of crypto, from "guaranteed 100x" to "official airdrop", is a sign to leave.
Frequently confused points
"Which one has the best chance of a comeback?" Nobody knows, and any person who claims otherwise is selling something. Each of these tokens has had huge drawdowns relative to its highs. WIF's own CoinGecko page showed the price roughly 95% below its all-time high in October 2026. A recovery to old highs would require a large inflow of new buyers, and that is not something a comparison table can predict.
"Is a bigger supply worse?" No. Supply only matters when combined with price: market cap equals price times circulating supply. BONK's supply of tens of trillions and WIF's of about a billion simply produce very different per-token prices.
"Do exchange listings make one safer?" A listing means an exchange saw enough demand and liquidity, and that it passed some checks. It is not an endorsement, and the December 2024 slide that followed Coinbase and Robinhood listings of WIF is a reminder.
"Can I move between them cheaply?" On Solana, swapping one memecoin for another through an aggregator such as Jupiter is typically a few cents in network fees plus slippage and any pool fees. For small amounts the slippage and spread usually dominate, and thin pairs can be far worse.
Quick answers
Which is better, WIF, BONK or POPCAT?
None is objectively better; all three are speculative memecoins with no cash flows. They differ in age, supply, community and listings. Rankings by market cap flip over time, so check live data and decide how much risk you are comfortable with.
Is BONK older than WIF?
Yes. CoinGecko says BONK launched on Christmas Day 2022 with an airdrop to Solana users. WIF launched in late 2023. POPCAT is based on a meme from October 2020, and we could not find an official launch date for the token.
Which has the biggest market cap, WIF or BONK?
It has changed hands. Decrypt reported that WIF overtook BONK in March 2024 and that BONK took Solana's top meme spot back on 19 November 2024. Today's ranking is on CoinGecko; we do not hardcode it.
Is POPCAT on Coinbase?
Coinbase announced a POPCAT-USD trading pair with phased support on 13 February 2025, subject to liquidity and regional limits. Check the asset page in your app for availability where you live.
Do WIF, BONK and POPCAT have utility?
WIF has no product or staking that we could verify. BONK's community has built wallet and DeFi-related projects around it, according to some sources, but the token itself is still primarily a memecoin. CoinGecko describes POPCAT as entertainment only.
Which is safest to buy?
None is safe in the sense of being low-risk. Compare liquidity, supply, the genuine contract address and exchange regulation. Use only money you can afford to lose, and verify the mint address of each token before swapping.
