If you have seen a grumpy-looking Shiba Inu in a pink knitted beanie anywhere on crypto Twitter, you have met dogwifhat. The coin is called WIF, it lives on the Solana blockchain, and it is one of the best-known examples of a memecoin: a token whose entire personality is a joke that got out of hand. This page explains what it is in plain language, where the picture came from, how the coin took off, and what it does and does not give you. If you are after something else, there are sibling guides for how to buy WIF, the live WIF price and the WIF contract address.

The short version

dogwifhat is a memecoin. It was launched in late 2023 on the Solana network, uses a photo of a Shiba Inu wearing a pink knitted hat as its logo, and the name is a purposeful misspelling of "dog with hat". There is no company to sue, no product to use and no promised yield. What there is: a community, a lot of jokes, a fixed supply of roughly 998.9 million tokens and a price chart that has been anything but boring.

That honesty matters, because many pages about WIF read like brochures. This one is an independent fan-and-research guide, so we will tell you the fun parts and the uncomfortable parts in the same breath.

Where the dog in the hat came from

The picture is a real photograph of a Shiba Inu in a woven beanie, not an AI render and not a cartoon. According to Know Your Meme, the image circulated years before the coin existed: edits with team logos stitched onto the hat spread across Twitter in late December 2019, mostly as profile pictures for esports organisations and personalities. The page does not give the exact date or the photographer of the original shot, and we could not verify those details either, so we will not invent a backstory.

What you can see is why it worked as a meme. The dog's face is calm, a bit unimpressed, and the hat is absurdly cute. It is easy to edit, easy to recognise at 48 pixels wide, and it comes with a built-in pun. "Dog wif hat" is written the way you would say it with a goofy voice. That is a template for endless variations: dog wif sunglasses, dog wif crown, dog wif whatever the community feels like. If you like that side of it, our memes and PFP community guide covers the creative scene.

How the coin started

Know Your Meme dates the token's debut to 20 November 2023, when dogwifhat appeared on Solana decentralized exchanges, with the first official website following on 26 November 2023. Other write-ups describe a fair-style launch: no presale, no venture-capital round, and the initial supply put into liquidity. We could not check the original launch transactions ourselves, so treat that as the commonly reported account rather than something we audited.

Who launched it? The honest answer is "an anonymous person or team". CoinGecko lists the project homepages (dogwifcoin.org and dogwifhat.us) and the X account @dogwifcoin, but no named founder, and we do not name one. If you ever see someone selling "access to the WIF team" or private alpha, assume it is a scam.

The timing mattered. In late 2023 Solana was staging a comeback, memecoins were the cheapest way for newcomers to try the network, and fees were tiny compared with Ethereum. WIF rode that wave.

The rise: listings, hype and the Sphere

A rough, source-backed timeline of the big moments:

  • 5 March 2024: Binance lists WIF for spot trading with pairs including USDT, BTC, FDUSD and TRY, and a Seed Tag (Binance's label for newer, higher-risk assets).
  • Early March 2024: Robinhood's EU crypto arm also lists it; we could not confirm the exact date.
  • 10 March 2024: the community launches a fundraiser to put the dog on the Las Vegas Sphere. Decrypt reported roughly $690,000 raised in March 2024, but the Sphere told Decrypt there was no deal, and we never saw a confirmed ad. Read it as a community stunt, not a partnership.
  • 31 March 2024: the all-time high, $4.83 on CoinGecko (some sources round to $4.85).
  • 18 April 2024: Coinbase announces dogwifhat perpetual futures.
  • 18 September 2024: WIF is listed on Gemini, per Know Your Meme.

Separately, The Block reported on 13 November 2024 that Coinbase announced a listing plan for the token. Support can vary by region, so check the exchange yourself instead of relying on an old headline.

A memecoin is a joke that people agreed to value. The joke can be great fun. The valuation is the part that can hurt.

What WIF does (and what it doesn't)

Technically, WIF is an SPL token, the standard token format on Solana. In Solana terms, a mint account identifies the token and stores things like total supply and who, if anyone, may create more. You can see the real mint on our contract address page. The supply figure CoinGecko shows is 998,926,392 for both total and circulating, and several sources report that the mint authority was revoked, meaning no new tokens can be created. That is something you can verify yourself on a Solana explorer instead of taking our word for it. We go deeper on the numbers in WIF tokenomics.

What WIF does not have, as far as we can verify:

  • No native staking or yield. Third-party validators and DeFi products can exist, but a token page promising "WIF staking APY" is usually a scam or a separate product with its own risks.
  • No governance system or product roadmap to deliver.
  • No known built-in burn mechanism or transfer tax. We did not find evidence of either.

So why does it have value at all? Because people want it. Memecoins trade on attention, community strength and liquidity. When attention rises, prices can leap; when it leaves, they can fall hard. That is the whole model.

Why people like it

  • Instantly recognisable, friendly brand
  • Fixed supply and no known inflation
  • Listed on large exchanges and tradable around the clock
  • Active meme and PFP community

Why it is risky

  • Price is driven by sentiment, not cash flows
  • Anonymous team and no formal obligations
  • Large drawdowns from the 2024 peak
  • Scam tokens and fake sites copy the name

dogwifhat vs the other dog coins

Dogecoin, Shiba Inu and Bonk all get lumped together, but they are separate projects. Dogecoin has its own blockchain, SHIB started on Ethereum, and Bonk is another Solana memecoin. WIF is "just" the hat dog. We compare it with Bonk and Popcat in our WIF vs BONK vs Popcat guide, and if you want the latest happenings, see the WIF news timeline.

One useful way to think about it: the hat dog is a brand. Brands in crypto behave like lottery tickets with a mascot. Some people enjoy the fun and the community, some trade short-term swings, and some buy a small amount just to own the pink-hat avatar.

Is dogwifhat safe?

Two different questions hide behind that. First, is the real token safe from rug-pulls or sudden dilution? With a fixed supply and a revoked mint authority, the classic "dev prints more coins" scenario is unlikely, though you should always verify on-chain. Second, is buying WIF safe for your wallet? That depends on you: price can drop 50 percent in weeks, and fake tokens with similar names are everywhere. Our dedicated is dogwifhat safe guide goes through red flags in detail.

Practical habits that help:

  1. Always copy the mint address from a trusted source and check it on a block explorer.
  2. Never sign a transaction on a site you reached via a random DM or ad.
  3. Do not share your seed phrase, ever.
  4. Only invest what you can lose without it hurting.

Not financial advice. WIF is volatile and speculative. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy or sell, and no one can promise returns.

How people actually get WIF

You have two broad routes. You can use a centralised exchange, where you sign up, verify your identity, deposit money and buy WIF as you would any asset. Or you can use a Solana wallet and a decentralised exchange, which gives you self-custody but requires you to handle addresses, fees and risk yourself. Our how to buy WIF guide walks through both, and where to buy WIF compares platforms. If you want a no-frills option, CEX.IO is a long-running exchange that offers WIF conversions; whichever platform you consider, check its legal page and the relevant regulator's register first.

Quick answers people search for

Is dogwifhat dead? No: it still trades, though with far lower volume and price than at its 2024 peak. Check the live price page rather than trusting an old article.

Can WIF go to $1 or $10? Possibly, mathematically, but that requires a huge market cap. We lay out the numbers honestly on the WIF price prediction page.

Where is the contract? Use the mint EKpQGSJtjMFqKZ9KQanSqYXRcF8fBopzLHYxdM65zcjm and verify it against CoinGecko and an explorer, as explained in the contract address guide.

Bottom line

dogwifhat is a very online, very recognisable Solana memecoin with a cute photo, a fixed supply and a wild history. It is not a business, a savings plan or a safe place for money you need. If you enjoy the culture and understand the risk, a small, deliberate position is a personal choice. If you are here for certainty, memecoins are the wrong asset class. Keep reading the linked guides, double-check addresses, and enjoy the dog.

Quick answers

What is dogwifhat coin?

dogwifhat (WIF) is a memecoin on the Solana blockchain. Its logo is a Shiba Inu wearing a pink knitted hat, and its name is a deliberate misspelling of 'dog with hat'. It has no product, no roadmap promises and no native yield; its value comes from attention and trading.

Who created dogwifhat?

The team behind WIF is anonymous and the project presents itself as community-driven. We have not found a verified founder, so we do not name one. Be sceptical of anyone online who claims to speak for 'the dogwifhat team' or offers insider access.

When did dogwifhat launch?

WIF launched on Solana decentralized exchanges on 20 November 2023, according to Know Your Meme, with the first website following about a week later. It reached its all-time high of $4.83 on 31 March 2024 per CoinGecko.

Is dogwifhat the same as Dogecoin or Shiba Inu (SHIB)?

No. Dogecoin runs on its own blockchain and SHIB is an Ethereum token. dogwifhat is a separate Solana token. They share dog branding and a meme culture, but they are different assets with different supply, code and communities.

Does WIF have a use case?

WIF has no built-in utility. It is a cultural token: people hold it as a bet on the meme, trade it, or use the image as a profile picture. Anything described as 'WIF staking' or a 'WIF app' needs careful checking before you connect a wallet.

Is dogwifhat a good investment?

Nobody can honestly say. WIF is a highly volatile memecoin that fell far from its 2024 peak. Treat it as speculation: only use money you can afford to lose and never borrow to buy it.
